The Mercedes-Benz W203 C Class EIS / EZS ignition switch is the main component of a very complex and secure drive authorisation system and due to its sensitive electronics it can easily become damaged. Often causing no dash lights or start when turning the key in the ignition or sometimes the key won’t turn at all.
Then leave one inside the car and keep the small metal manual key separate from the electronic key. In case the new key is giving you problems in a week month etc, you can open the car with the manual key, get the spare and immediately the next day go and get a new key.

Apparently faulty steering locks on 204's are getting quite common, between Bristol and Bath around 25 have been replaced in the last 2 months for this very fault. M. If you can get the key to turn, remove the tumbler immediately. If you don't and it won't turn again it needs to be cut off with a dremel. Set aside 3-4hrs to do this. When MB designed the anti-theft collar for the tumbler -- they did not fool around with any flimsey metal.

3307 posts · Joined 2006. #2 · Jan 14, 2009 (Edited) just bit the bullet and bought a replacement barrel from my indy -$90 Aust ($60 US) There are 2 options - order the same key/barrel from Benz or buy a new (different) key/barrel-cheaper. I opted for the different key as central locking makes the original key for the doors almost redundant
1.taking out a key and. 2. putting it back in the ignition. 3. turning it couple times back and forth. 4. taking it out again waiting and redoing this whole process couple of times it would start. So, the MB Dealer after saying that they don't see any codes and then finally seeing it, replaced the Ignition Switch.
I called my local Benz dealership and spoke with the service technician. I told him my problem and he advised me of 3 possible problems: - ignition switch failure. - brake switch failure. - gear selector failure. I ruled out the ignition switch failure, as I could easily start the car and shift the car past "Park".
