To prevent damage or scratches to the hard top when not in use, Mazda offers two different storage possibilities. Hard Top Stand. A hard top stand (3600-77-614) safely holds the hard top in vertical position. Its rolls will allow moving it around. When not in use you can fold it away. A dust cover to protect the hard top is included. The Frankenstein bolts are for locating the hardtop, not securing it. A long time ago, and within walking distance from my house, a ten year old kid was killed when his father hit a pole in a hardtop equipped Miata. The top continued forward and took off the top of his head. The hardtop may even have been secured properly with all four latches.

droz3. On a Z3 you fold down the softtop and install the hardtop. 2 locating pins in the back of the hardtop, 1 on each side, they both go down in a female pin locator. A lock handle will lock the locating pin in place. One of the female pin locator is wired to provide power to the hardtop rear defrost.

All you need to do is pry the grille straight up to remove it, then remove the two Phillips screws securing the speaker to the dash. My attemp at replacing the OEM soft top to a canvas style soft top for my 1999 NB Miata AGdW9.
