The 2.2L RF diesel engine was used in the Ford Ranger pickup truck from 1982-84 (but, ironically, it was never offered in its predecessor, the Courier, which was an actual Mazda derivative sold in the years 1972-82) and was replaced by the Mitsubishi 2.3L turbo diesel for the years 1985-87.

After the face lift the issues were widely ironed out and in the new model the issues don't arise at all.There was a new warranty of 2 years on this repair that has been recently over. I was advised to take the car to official Mazda dealer to have a look, and they might send a request to Mazda asking for a free repair. Then I took the car from the service shop and to my surprise there were no warning lights anymore.
The Mazda 2.2 diesel is well known for some serious issues which can lead to very expensive problems, including new engines. Diesel can contaminate the engine oil during DPF regeneration, leading to dilution and this may well be why the turbo failed. Check the engine oil on a weekly basis and if the level is rising it does need to be changed.
