Regular mk7s have thermostat issues and that's pretty much it. Mk7.5 had manual transmission issues from the factory. If you buy one used you probably won't experience it. Supposedly the dsg in the 7.5 is more reliable. VW changed the recommendation for dsg fluid changes up to 60k miles from 40k. 3.
Be aware that the DSG transmission that is optional on the GTI and R, and the AWD system in the R, are additional maintenance. They need periodic (about every 2-3 years) fluid changes, which from the dealer costs around 300-500 each time. IMO: the most reliable is a tie between a manual 1.8TSI Golf (including Sportwagen) and GTI.
